Removing the foam blockage allows the filter to flow more air and raised the fuel requirement based on a higher MAF reading. The clogged air filter probably prevented the engine from running lean with the JET MAF sensor due to reducing air flow which reduced fuel need commanded by the ECU. So I assume that the foam was probably on the air filter even since I upgraded my air box 5 years ago hence why i did not have any codes until recently when I inspected my air filter.īest guess is that the JET MAF sensor is flowing too much air for the stock 26lb fuel injectors to compensate for when tuned so the engine is running too lean with the Diablo tuner. When I removed the foam off the air filter, the lean codes started. The only new change I noticed before the lean codes was that my air filter was clogged with a large section of the airbox foam seal that seals against the fender that must have came loose over the years when I removed the airbox for repair work or upgrading. However, I replaced the JET MAF sensor with my stock MAF and the lean codes has gone away without returning so far. It has been throwing a random lean code ever so often. (Nothing is wrong with the Northstar engine - properly maintained it's strong, quiet, reliable.)Ĭlick to expand.Well, to be honest my JET MAF sensor has been acting up with my Diablo tuner recently. the old before and after timeslips showed a. and if you compare the JET site picture with my workbench picture you'll see that they have further mechanically modified the MAF since I bought one in 2007 - and did a year's worth of test driving with it and the stock one. Ĭuriously, they list the SAME picture for my 2002 Northstar engine - a 279 C.I. Same P/N for a 324 cubic inch and for a 366 cubic inch engine? Gee, one would think they required different air flow volumes at higher rpms. If you do the swap, be alert for lean mixture codes. Nothing is done to either the heated resistors or to the IAT thermistor. They take a stock DELPHI ("AC Delco") MAF and mechanically modify it then call it a "performance" MAF. JET does not "make" those MAFs - yours or mine.
